Yates and Jay, Burns and Goult

Burns & Goult was a law firm serving Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, the Western Communities, Oak Bay, and other areas on southern Vancouver Island. Arthur J. Burns was one of the principal partners of the firm. The material in this records group includes documents from Burns & Goult, and incorporates papers of the earlier law offices of Yates and Jay, J.S. Yates, Yates and Yates, Yates and Burns, and Arthur J. Burns.

Scholes, David

David Scholes came to Victoria from Hamilton, Ontario in October of 1919, at the age of 9. His parents were from Manchester, England. He attended Margaret Jenkins School, Victoria High and Sprott Shaw where he trained as a wireless operator in 1928. He worked at various jobs using this background. Beginning in 1936, Mr. Scholes kept bees, and was an Apiary Inspector from 1960-1975. He was a member of the Saanich Pioneer Society. He lived at 1431 Harrop Road. Mr. Scholes died Nov 2, 1995.

McTavish, Duncan

Duncan McTavish was the son of George Archibald McTavish and Catherine Amelia McTavish (daughter of J.S. Helmcken). Duncan McTavish was born in 1882 on the family farm, Ardmore Estate on West Saanich Road. This was in all probability the first nursery to be operated in Saanich or on the Island. It was also the first farm in Saanich to install a telephone. Duncan Mctavish died in 1967. The donor, Mrs. Pearce, was the daughter of Duncan McTavish; she passed away in 1984.

Ruby, Bill

Bill Ruby's grandfather was James Richards, an early settler in Saanich. Mr. Richards was born in Cornwall, England and emigrated to Central City, Colorado with his wife. In 1890, after the death of one of their three children, they moved to Springridge in the Victoria area. They later bought 75 acres where University Heights is now (2007). They had three more boys, one being William Richards (Bill Ruby's uncle) who purchased property on Ruby Road and started a dairy farm. Bill Ruby's mother and father started a dairy farm in the 1930's on Kenmore and Shelbourne Street. Mr. Ruby Sr. delivered milk to the Gordon Head and Cedar Hill districts. Later he sold milk to Shepherds Dairy. Bill Ruby Jr. attended Cedar Hill School and later built greenhouses where he grew tomatoes and flowers.

Sehl family

The Sehl family lived at 2411 Wark Street in Victoria. Frank J. Sehl was Secretary of the Canadian Club and the first Grand Knight of the Victoria Knights of Columbus, and was well known in the local music community. Frank Sehl’s wife, Elizabeth Kezia Styles Sehl, attended St. Ann's Academy, as did his sisters and his children.
