The Bown family owned the North Saanich Hotel near Sidney, and operated the post office on site. Charles Quinton Bown Sr. is listed as the Postmaster from April 12, 1905 to December 18, 1906. The eldest daughter Marian (May) Bown married James Hector Monk, teacher at North Saanich School. The other members of the family later moved back to Manitoba.

On July 24, 1907, nine years after the death of her husband, William George Bradshaw, Sarah Bradshaw left Placentia, Newfoundland with her children for Victoria B.C. (1 son and 7 daughters, although only 6 of the children traveled with her in 1907). They traveled via steamer to Montreal, then C.P.R. rail to Vancouver, and finally on the "Charmer" to Victoria, arriving in the early morning of August 9, 1907. Uncle Albert Bradshaw (Sarah's brother-in-law-) also of Placentia, accompanied the family on their journey.
In 1906, Sarah had visited Victoria to see her brother, Augustus "Gus" Windsor, and she fell in love with the area. She asked her brother to build a new home for her and her family in the Mount Tolmie area. They resided at 3701 Palo Alto Street from 1907 until 1950.
Sarah's eldest child (and only son) Will, had left Placentia ahead of the family, as he was attending school in Montreal. He arrived in Victoria May 30, 1909. The third eldest Hannah "Nance" also came later, arriving in Victoria in 1908.
Sarah and William George Bradshaw's children were: Will (1888-1951); Ethel (Lytton) (1889-1951); Hannah "Nance" (Wall) (1891-1984); Beatrice "Trix" (1892-1945); twins, Florence "Floss" (1894-1937) and Anna (Travis) (1894-1980); Henrietta "Hetty" (1896-1994); Madeline (Howden) (1898-2000).

Moran J.J. Brethour, born in 1912, was a great grandson of Samuel Brethour, one of Saanich Peninsula’s earliest settlers whose sons later founded the town of Sidney on the family 500 acre homestead in 1891. Moran grew up in the area, attended Sidney School, married Bessie Turgoose of Saanichton, and had one daughter. Mr. Brethour was a member of the Saanich Pioneer Society and served as its president for a number of terms. He died in 1998.
