Deans family

James and George Deans came to Vancouver Island from Scotland as employees of the Hudson's Bay Company in 1852 on the Norman Morison. They eventually purchased land near Mount Tolmie where they established a farm, Oak Vale. James became fluent in many First Nations dialects and was an authority on First Nations culture. He died in 1905.

Rosson, Lorna June

Lorna June Rosson (called June) was the granddaughter of George Pollard Rosson who owned the Rock Bay Saloon on Bay Street in Victoria. Her father, George William Rosson, was born in Victoria in 1880. He worked for the Municipality of Saanich for 17 years. June’s two brothers owned greenhouses on Shelbourne Street, and June worked as a horticultural assistant in greenhouses and hothouses from 1945 to 1977. June Rosson was born in 1920 and lived continuously in the family home at 1591 San Juan Avenue (formerly McMorran Avenue) in Gordon Head until her death in 1988.

Middleton, Ken

Ken Middleton began working at the District of Saanich with the Saanich Tax Department in 1947 and remained with the Municipality for 45 years. He was a member of the Saanich Special Events Committee for ca. 40 years including a number of years as Chairman. Ken Middleton served for over 25 years on the Saanich Civil Defence Program. He was also instrumental in the process to have the Saanich Coat of Arms sanctioned by the Queen’s College of Arms. In June 1992 he was recognized as a Freeman of Saanich. Ken Middleton was known as “Mr. Saanich”, and in May 2001 the outer courtyard of Saanich Municipal Hall was dedicated as “Middleton Plaza”. Ken Middleton died on October 31, 2003.

Morrison, Jo-Anne

Jo-Anne Morrison was a long-time employee at the District of Saanich and served as the Deputy Municipal Clerk. She was responsible for establishing an archives for the municipality in 1978 and served as the first municipal archivist.
