Biographical history

William Bruce Hutchison was born in Prescott, Ontario on June 5, 1901 and came to British Columbia as an infant. He began his extensive journalism career in 1918 with the Victoria Daily Times. In 1925 he went to work in the Ottawa Press Gallery, and in the same year married Dorothy Kidd McDiarmid. They had two children, Joan Edith and Robert Bruce, who were both raised in Saanich. In 1926 Bruce Hutchison built his home on land purchased from George Rogers. The house, located at 820 Rogers Avenue, is now a designated heritage building. During his career, Bruce Hutchison held editorial positions with the Victoria Times, the Winnipeg Free Press, and the Vancouver Sun. He continued to write a weekly column, with his last column appearing in the Vancouver Sun on August 22, 1992. His work as a journalist, writer, and political commentator earned him numerous awards and honours throughout his life including appointments to the Order of Canada in 1967 and the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada in 1992. He received multiple Governor-General’s Awards for his writing and was made a Freeman of Saanich in 1990. Bruce Hutchison died in his Saanich home in 1992 at the age of 91.
