Biographical history
Jack McRae is a descendant of Elizabeth and George McRae Sr. George. McRae was a native of New Zealand who came to America in the 1880s. In 1889 he married Elizabeth in Seattle and moved to Victoria. They bought Victoria District Sections 42 and 43, over 200 acres. George died in 1901, leaving Elizabeth with five young children. She tried to sell the property but it was reverted to her through payment defaults. About 1917 she rented the land to Mr. Eves who started the Cedar Hill Golf Course. In 1967, Saanich Municipality purchased the land for the golf course and recreation centre for 1.2 million dollars. The McRaes retained life-tenancy of the house and the surrounding two acres and the use of the outbuildings.
