History
Raymond McLaurin Lamont was born on October 27, 1918 in Victoria. His father, Neil Lamont, was a farmer in the Island View area of Saanich and a founding member of Growers' Wine Company. Neil Lamont grew loganberries, blackberries and raspberries, and would later use his loganberries to produce wine. Ray did not work in the winery, but continued the family farm, raising mink and turkeys as his father had done. Lamont Road, on which the farm was located, is named after the family. Ray Lamont married Pat Hutchison in 1943 and later married Maxine (maiden name unknown). In 1951 at the age of 32, Ray Lamont was elected to the first Central Saanich council, serving for 19 years. He was also a member of the Pioneer Society in Saanichton. Ray Lamont had a sister, Hazel, and a brother, Hugh. Ray Lamont died in Victoria on January 30, 2002.
