Historia biográfica

The Marigold Playground Group was formed in 1949 to provide a playground and summer activities for area children. Marigold Park moved to Iris Avenue from its original location on Violet Avenue in 1949. The Playground Group raised money for the construction of the playground by logging and selling some of the trees on the lot, a plan which originally met with some disapproval among residents. After the Municipality of Saanich began to fund the position of supervisor of playground activities, the Playground Group also raised money to fund the position of assistant to the supervisor. Primary fundraisers for the group were a regular bazaar and strawberry teas. In later years, raffles became the main source of revenue to purchase supplies, treats and prizes for the summer playground program. The Playground Group also organized an annual Santa visit to distribute gifts to neighbourhood children. As the Municipality took over more responsibility for the summer program, the Playground Group shifted its focus to holding senior citizens activity programs in the Marigold Scout Hall. The last meeting of the Playground Group was held on February 16, 1968, after which time the group name was changed to the Marigold Group. The seniors’ group activities ended in 1975 due to changing demographics in the area, with the Christmas Santa visits ending soon after.
